March 2023 Simple Life’s Biodiversity Project launches

The importance of the partnership and balance between people and the planet, and the very obvious and well documented benefits to both, is the focus of our newly launched Simple Life Schools and Community Biodiversity project. Partnering with Green the UK, this project will, as part of phase 1, work with 12 schools on wildflowers and vegetable planting and learning; several schools on planting 200 trees; and planting up a hectare with wildflowers, across the country. This first phase will cover 4 schools in Telford, 4 schools in Wigan and 4 schools in Sheffield, along with schools in the Doncaster area planting trees, and the wildflower planting in the Telford area.

The first event at Telford’s Manor Road Pitmound on 27th March, saw Sigma Capital team members team up with the Buglife team, as part of GreenTheUK’s B-Lines Insect Pathways Project, to clear part of the heathland for reseeding of heathers and other native wildflowers, supporting the movement, and presence, of many small creatures such as the increasingly rare Dingy Skipper butterfly.

For the second event of launch week, Sigma Capital’s ESG Director, Niamh Waldron, joined the pupils and staff at Waverley Primary School in Doncaster, for a tree planting day, including lessons about the importance of trees, and planting trees in their school grounds. This was in partnership with The Royal Forestry Society and their Teaching Trees team.

Plans are in place for phase 2, later this year, covering 4 schools in or near to Accrington or Blackburn, 4 schools in or near to Shipley or Bradford, and 4 schools in or near to Smethwick; with another hectare of wildflowers in either Accrington or Blackburn.

So begins the creation of a Simple Life Biodiversity Pathway map, illustrating the pathways for wildlife and enhanced community spaces created – as part of the PRS REIT’s commitment to making a difference and positive impact on the environment and our communities.
